Join basketweaver Emily Chilvers for an evening of sculptural weaving and learn how to make a small intricate basket using the coiling method, an ancient weaving technique.
Emily will introduce you to the coiled basket making method, an ancient weaving technique sometimes known as the ‘foragers basket’. You will create rhythmical coiled forms by incorporating natural, man-made and recycled materials. Drawing inspiration from our current exhibition Anthony Caro: The Inspiration of Architecture, you will also expand upon the sculptural quality of the technique by using precut shapes to explore elements of structure and space.
Emily is a potter and basketweaver with a passion for sharing her skills with others. She believes that no matter how old you are, creativity is an important form of expression and a tool to communicate. Whether that’s making a simple mark on a page, digging a nail into a soft piece of clay or weaving a form with a piece of willow, there is a way into the creative world for everyone and Emily enjoys being able to offer her workshops for all ages and abilities.
