On Wednesday 31 March join us in conversation with Bettany Hughes OBE, award-winning historian, author and broadcaster.
In this conversation with Sir Sherard (also a classicist), Bettany will discuss her recent book Venus & Aphrodite: History of a Goddess, which charts ancient art, evocative myth, archaeological revelations and philosophical explorations to reveal why Venus endures through to the 21st century. She will consider the lasting importance of classical civilisation which significantly influenced Sir John Soane, as evident in the classical references seen at Pitzhanger.
Sir John Soane used Pitzhanger Manor to entertain his wide circle of friends, celebrities and potential clients, bringing together opera singers and politicians, academics and poets at eclectic dinners. Inspired by this spirit of Pitzhanger as a forum for interesting encounters and enlightening debate, Pitzhanger Perspectives is a new series of conversations with contemporary thinkers. This first set of talks will be in conversation with Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Chair of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Trust.
Future discussions in the series are with:
- Miles Young
- Vikram Jayanti
- Rory Stewart OBE
