HMT Empire Windrush arrived in Britain on 22 June 1948 with more than 800 passengers from the Caribbean. To mark the 75th anniversary of the day, Pitzhanger is hosting a free, drop-in workshop with textile artist Candice Rodney-Sobers.
Madras fabric is used throughout the Caribbean; in every Caribbean country which uses it within its national dress, the Madras cloth has a unique colour and style. Using strips of discarded fabric, you will create your own fabric sample and learn about the origins of Caribbean Madras fabric: from its beginnings in Chennai, India, influenced by tartan worn by Scottish regiments, to its journey to the Caribbean.
