Quilting Workshop with Tamira Kitchens
Quilts have very high significance in black history; many traditional quilt patterns originated in Africa, and were brought to America by enslaved people. They were used by slaves to send codes to each other at a time when reading and writing was illegal for them to do. This eventually helped them to find freedom though the ability to secretly communicate. Many enslaved women would use quilting as a creative tool which empowered them and gave them a sense of purpose, and it was a commonly used method of storytelling and teaching each other.
Unity and teamwork have been a crucial part of black history, and have often been the only source of motivation and power throughout history for people of colour. That is why this workshop is about working together, each making a small part of a larger piece of artwork. You can make up your own designs or use the materials given to you to recreate some traditional quilt patterns onto a square. Then we will stick together each person’s square to make one big piece of art like a quilt!

Come to Pitzhanger for a special Open Sunday art workshop for Kongtinue: Hong Kong Cultural Fun Day with comic artist Justin Wong!
Imagine going through the process of preparing for immigration. If you were to move home, where would you like to live in the world? What would you bring with you? What would you say to your old home, and what would you expect from your new home?
Inspired by these questions, create collages and drawings with London-based comic artist Justin Wong in this special Open Sunday workshop for Kongtinue: Hong Kong Cultural Fun Day.
Justin Wong is a London-based comic writer. He began his career as a political cartoonist and editorial illustrator in 2007. His daily political cartoon column, “Gei Gei Gaak Gaak,” was published in the Hong Kong newspaper, Ming Pao. Wong has authored several graphic novels, including “Lonely Planet,” “Hello World,” “That City,” “New Hong Kong,” “Big Time,” and “Je préfèrerais ne pas.” These novels have been published in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and France. Additionally, Wong served as an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University from 2008 to 2021.

Ruth Pickard is an artist, specialising in drawing. I work in response to feelings, thoughts and things I sees around me, I also use art as a means to play. I often work quickly and intuitively, I am never quite sure what is going to happen, where I am going to go, I let the art making take me on a journey. I run art workshops with children and adults, with the aim of enabling others to explore and experiment.
