Special Lunar New Year Open Sunday
Join Yuyu Rau from New Earth Theatre for an interactive storytelling of the ancient legend of how the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals were chosen to represent the Chinese Lunar Years!
There will be two 45-minute-long performances of this storytelling session, the first at 10:30am and the second at 11:30am.
New Earth Theatre is a national touring theatre company that places British East and South East Asian (BESEA) artists and communities at the heart of all our work.
Now in its 28th year we continue on our journey to bring the voices, stories and creativity of BESEA artists to audiences across the UK and beyond.
This interactive session is designed to be fun and educational, introducing you to the traditional tools, materials, and techniques of Chinese painting. Aligned with the Lunar New Year theme, participants will create their paintings, capturing the essence of this important Southeast and East Asian festival. Your artwork will be a wonderful expression of creativity and a perfect decorative piece to celebrate the season.
Born in Hong Kong, Helen’s artistic journey began at the tender age of four. Her passion for arts led to a significant scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charity Fund for her bachelor’s degree in education (visual arts) at the Education University of Hong Kong. Under the tutelage of the renowned Mr. Mok E-den, she honed her skills in Chinese painting for over a decade. Helen’s studio delivered comprehensive visual arts programs to children and youth across Hong Kong’s schools and associations. Her mentorship has propelled her students to international art competition successes, and she was honoured with The Outstanding Teacher award. Helen’s influence in art education extends to her roles as an advisory artist and judge for the Education University of Hong Kong and Po Leung Kuk schools. Her commitment to community service is evident in her voluntary work as a Chinese painting tutor for the Fu Hong Association’s special needs and disabled members. After organising several art exhibitions in Hong Kong and London, Helen furthered her education with an advanced diploma in British and European studies from the University of Oxford and relocated to London. Her artistic explorations now include integrating traditional Chinese painting techniques into new media, such as digital arts and cake decorating. Helen is passionately dedicated to preserving Hong Kong’s cultural heritage in the UK. She promotes Cantonese language and traditional Chinese ink painting through workshops and community activities. Her vision extends to nurturing the self-identity and confidence of second-generation UK Hongkongers in this diverse international city.
Create your own paper weavings in this fun workshop with artist Judy Preece.
