10 December

Victorian Christmas Decorations with Cai Jia Eng

Come and make your own festive decorations with artist Cai Jia Eng inspired by the Victorian era.

The Victorians made Christmas decorations by hand using natural and household items that were easily available to them such as oranges, popcorn and paper cones. We will take a modern spin on this to make our own beautiful but sustainable keepsakes using a mix of traditional and contemporary materials.

Cai Jia Eng (@thisismisseng, www.thisismisseng.com) is a London-based artist and educator. Her practice spans illustration, design and painting, and currently focuses on portraiture and familial relationships. Her work was recently published in the ‘Portraits for NHS Heroes’ book by Bloomsbury. Over the last 12 years she has worked with every age group in schools from 3 to 18, and currently teaches both adults and children in West London in a range of disciplines.

She is available for commission, and can be engaged for private tuition or workshops – please see www.thisismisseng.com for more.

Drop in from 10:30am – 12:30pm in the Georgian Eating Room.

17 December

Drop-in Art Workshop with Tamira Kitchens

In this session you will be looking at Annie Morris’ stack sculptures and paintings and using them as inspiration to design your own house! Her stack sculptures show how we can be creative with the ways that we stick objects together with different methods such as stacking and balancing them, and don’t have to stick to everyday designs. After you’ve finished your building you can be inspired by her style of painting to decorate its exterior. You’ll be able to use all kinds of materials and explore different ways of piecing them together to make a completely unique design to take home with you!

About the Artist:

I’m Tamira, I’m an artist and architecture student in London, and I’m interested in the intersection between technology, art, and people. I believe that we can use design to help improve people’s lives, whether that is on an individual scale – by using creativity to relieve stress, form ideas, and as a social activity – or on a much larger scale, by designing cities and artwork which benefit members of a society in the long term. Over the past year I have been working with a charity in Tottenham which provides mentoring to care-affected girls; this has strengthened my aspirations to continue to work with young people and inspire creative thinking, as I have seen first hand how it can have such a positive impact on young peoples’ lives!

Drop in from 10:30am – 12:30pm in the Education Room.
