Join our very special Members’ visit to The Cosmic House near Holland Park, one of the most unique and remarkable domestic building of the late twentieth century
Overview
The Cosmic House, a four-floored Victorian residence near Holland Park in west London, was bought by the architect Charles Jencks and his wife, the garden designer Maggie Keswick in 1978. Together with the architect Terry Farrell they made the interior into a manifesto of Jencks’s ideas and a theatre of their public and private lives. In 2018 the house was Grade I listed, in recognition as its status as a built manifesto for Post Modernism and a pivotal centre of global architectural culture. The house was opened in 2021 to the public following Jenck’s wishes before his death.
The Cosmic House is a post-modern masterpiece, with contributions from artists and designers including Michael Graves, Eduardo Paolozzi, Piers Gough and Allen Jones. With its inventive and sometimes kitsch decor, The Cosmic House is often compared to Sir John Soane’s house and museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Enjoy a visit to the house, with an introduction, and short film about its history and collection.
