London Luminaries — Soane and Turner: Architecture, Art, Friendship and Fishing

Overview

Join our director Clare Gough for an online talk with London Luminaries — Soane and Turner: Architecture, Art, Friendship and Fishing. Sir John Soane and JMW Turner were idiosyncratic and unique talents, creating works that, to this day, inspire pleasure and wonder. Although a generation apart, they formed a firm friendship. Turner was a guest at Pitzhanger, and Soane, in turn, influenced Turner’s designs for his country house, Sandycombe Lodge. The two men bonded over their fascination with light, the role of the classics in art and their love of fishing. This talk will explore an important kind of love, male friendship, and discuss its influence on both men.

About the Talk

This event is part of the London Luminaries’ Love and Death series of talks.

This talk will be given by two speakers:

Clare Gough is the Director of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, Sir John Soane’s ‘country’ house in Ealing, West London and its adjacent contemporary gallery. Clare’s career combines experience in the arts and commercial sectors. She was previously a Trustee of the Museum of the Home, Director of Communications at the National Gallery, and New Media Director at National Gallery Co. Ltd, before setting up an art consultancy working with the V&A and other institutions.

Dr Matthew Morgan is the part-time Museum Director of Turner’s House in Twickenham. He is an Associate Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London, where he also received his PhD in Museum Studies. He has worked in the heritage sector for ten years, including at the Royal Collection and the National Gallery. Prior to that, he was a Director at Christie’s.

Admission to this talk is free, but we encourage you to make a £5 donation for each talk, which will be divided equally between the twelve participating organisations.

The talk will start at 7 pm and last for approximately 30 minutes, with time being allowed for questions and answers at the end. It will be chaired by Professor Judith Hawley of the Department of English, Royal Holloway, University of London. It will end at or before 8 pm.

You will be sent a link by email an hour before the lecture begins, and you should follow this link at the appropriate time to join the audience.

Please note that booking will close one hour before the talk starts.
