The globally acclaimed author of Girl With a Pearl Earring talks about the inspiration and research behind her spellbinding new novel. Spanning centuries, The Glassmaker begins in 1486 in Murano, the island across the lagoon from Venice famed for its glass-making. Here, Orsola Rosso, the oldest daughter in a family of glassblowers is supporting her family by making beads in secret, at a time when women were not meant to work with glass.
