For over 100 years Ealing has been known as ‘the Queen of the Suburbs’. In this illustrated talk Simon brings to life the joys of living outside Zone 1 uncovering some of the capital’s overlooked treasures as he tells the stories behind magnificent buildings both in Ealing and other London suburbs, from the Hoover Factory on the A40, to the Mosaic House in Chiswick, the Ovaltine Factory in Kings Langley to stations that wouldn’t be out of place in Miami Beach. Discover the pioneer interwar architects who brought modernism to Britain and delight in the elegance of Art Deco buildings given a new lease of life.
Simon Pollock started @LondonSuburbia in 2022 as a way of telling the overlooked stories of the people and buildings of suburbia. This is his first book.
The aim of Ealing Book Festival is to celebrate the joy of reading and to advance engagement and education around literature and reading. Through our events we hope to bring people and communities together; grow audiences for literature; inspire writers and readers of all ages; showcase well-known authors and promote local writers.
