Overview

Pitzhanger Manor was designed by Sir John Soane in 1800 to create a showcase for his architectural skills. Soane designed many extraordinary buildings, but Pitzhanger is rare as a building designed, built and lived in by Soane.

After Soane sold the house in 1810, Pitzhanger passed through several owners before it was acquired by Ealing Council to serve as a Public Library, opening to the public for the first time in its history. In 1938, the Lending Library block was replaced by a new building which stands today as Pitzhanger Gallery. In 1996, it began showing exhibitions of contemporary art, before a recent restoration project that brought Pitzhanger closer to Soane’s intended design.

Director of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, Clare Gough, will lead this exclusive tour of Pitzhanger casting light on the architectural and design details as laid by Sir John Soane, as well as exploring its history as a public space in Ealing, and the recent restoration project that brought the house back to life.
